I started out watching my dad and grandfather doing work around the house; they were both carpenters. My male cousin was also a carpenter, and I would go on his jobs. He taught me how to sheetrock, spackle, and tape, training me hands-on on his jobs. I also worked for contractors. When I had built up my confidence, I learned more and started to get paid for my hard work.
Then I decided to go to school for more training with certifications. I started out in carpentry school in southwest Philadelphia with a company called Edward Neesmith Construction. I stayed with them for a few years, then branched off, wanting to do electrical work. I went to school, completed my training, and was awarded my certificate for electrical work. I was in the field for 8 months with some of my classmates; all the beginners were laid off.
Then I started working for investors as a subcontractor. After that, I wanted to learn painting, so I worked for a painting company for 2 years. Once I learned how to paint, I decided to take a class for entrepreneurship, where I earned a certificate.
Next, I wanted to learn about weatherization, so I took a year-long class and was offered a job as a subcontractor for ECA Energy Works, where I stayed for a few years. Then, in 2007, I wanted to start my own business. I also wanted to learn about concrete work and got into the union, staying for 11 years and becoming a journeyman in my third year.
Next, I worked with the Chamber of Commerce and the Enterprise Center for business certificates. Now, I am working to get federal and government jobs as I continue to grow my busy and network of clients. I liked earning certificates for my hard work and learning skills in construction. Three years ago, I became a volunteer firefighter. I have been doing this for 2 years in Pittsburgh Potter Township.

From the first day I met Ms. Darty we’ve been like a team; I could count on her to do her job and it’s completed without a problem. She’s a team player and as I see maybe one-day a team leader.

I am writing this letter in reference to the finisher Shawn Darty. I have personally worked with Shawn as both a foreman and as an owner since 2015. We have worked together on various projects and her work ethic has been consistent and admirable. I have always known for Shawn to arrive to work earlier than the expected time and to also have a willingness to stay later, even if just to learn more.
I have total confidence in Shawn’s ability as a worker in OPCMIA local 592 and a cement mason that is interested in learning more and more about the trade. I have had the pleasure and honor of watching her growth in ability and understanding over the past few years and I look forward to where she will eventually go in this trade, given the proper opportunities.
